When Anean Studio received the commission to redesign the sports complex in Sopuerta, Bizkaia, it wasn’t just another project.

It was an invitation to reshape a place rooted in daily life—a space where sport isn’t performance, but ritual.

The municipality, driven by a clear intention to respond to its citizens, set the wheels in motion for the transformation of the modest Santa Ana sports grounds into a place with broader meaning and deeper impact.

Seven disciplines were chosen—Basque bowling, pelota, skateboarding, pump track, calisthenics, climbing, and parkour. These weren’t selected to impress but to reflect real use, real people. Each one ties back to local habits, generational shifts, and the evolving rhythms of leisure.

The result is not a flashy statement, but a place that fits: open, robust, and ready.

One of the most compelling features is how the skatepark and pump track converge, allowing fluid transitions between the two.

It’s a quiet celebration of movement, encouraging spontaneous interaction across ages and interests.

Throughout the complex, landscaped pockets of native and adapted vegetation soften the built environment, inviting visitors to pause, look closely, and feel the shift between activity and rest.

The design follows gentle curves, using neutral tones that absorb rather than shout. Textures—concrete, timber, metal, stone—are placed with intent, not only to perform but to awaken the senses.

Paths unfold gradually, revealing unexpected corners and sightlines. The goal is not to overwhelm but to draw people in, time after time.

The new Santa Ana Sports Complex is a place built not just for sport, but for people. It tells a quiet story of care—about how architecture can listen, adapt, and give back.

As dusk settles on the hills of Sopuerta, the site remains alive, not with spectacle, but with purpose.

It’s a place shaped by many hands, and ready for many more.

Challenge & Context

Sopuerta, like many contemporary societies, faces growing challenges related to physical inactivity, social fragmentation, and limited intergenerational exchange. Sedentary lifestyles have become increasingly prevalent, particularly among younger populations, leading to long-term health concerns and reduced engagement with outdoor public space. At the same time, opportunities for spontaneous, informal physical activity are diminishing, often replaced by screen-based entertainment and constrained by a lack of accessible, well-adapted facilities.

This shift is compounded by a widening gap between generations. Children, youth, adults, and seniors frequently occupy separate spheres, with few shared environments designed to encourage meaningful interaction. The erosion of these intergenerational connections weakens community bonds, reducing opportunities for learning, empathy, and mutual support across age groups.

In addition, the absence of inclusive, universally accessible spaces limits participation. Without thoughtful planning, public environments risk serving only a narrow demographic, leaving others unseen or underserved. In such contexts, public infrastructure—especially for sport and recreation—often fails to reflect the social diversity it aims to support. These overlapping issues present a pressing challenge: how to foster active, connected, and inclusive communities in the face of shifting social dynamics.

Solution Proposed

“Collaboration Chain: Sports Project of Unity and Effort” is a collective initiative that brings together multiple agents in the development of a new sports complex in Sopuerta. Promoted by the municipality, the project is based on coordinated participation, where different actors contribute knowledge, resources, and experience toward a shared objective.

The design process incorporates the work of Lur Studio, which channels local voices and ensures that the facility responds to the specific needs and expectations of the community.

Anean Architecture and Design, as the lead architectural studio, is responsible for the overall development of the project. Their integrated design approach balances functional performance with spatial coherence, ensuring that the complex supports diverse uses while adapting to the physical landscape.

The construction has been entrusted to Urbabil, a company committed to technical precision and material quality. Meanwhile, the symbolic donation of an iron chain by Vicinay Sestao introduces a commemorative layer to the project, referencing Sopuerta’s mining heritage.

Together, these contributors form a structured chain of collaboration, whose outcome is a contemporary, inclusive sports facility rooted in shared purpose and local identity.

Impact

The development of the new sports complex has generated significant social and community benefits, contributing to the overall quality of life and strengthening local cohesion.

Far beyond the construction of athletic facilities, the project establishes a multifunctional public space that promotes physical activity, intergenerational interaction, and inclusive participation.

Designed to accommodate individuals of all ages and abilities—including children, youth, adults, older adults, and those with reduced mobility—the complex fosters a shared environment where diverse users engage in recreational and sporting activities.

The infrastructure has been strategically conceived to encourage both spontaneous use and organized programming, making it a versatile resource for the municipality and surrounding areas.

The implementation of structured offerings—such as masterclasses and technical training at various levels—demonstrates a sustained commitment to education, inclusion, and personal development.

These programs facilitate entry points for beginners while providing opportunities for skill advancement, ensuring that users are supported throughout their individual journeys.

Among the facility’s highlights, the parkour circuit stands out as a benchmark for urban sports. Its integration exemplifies a forward-thinking approach that embraces emerging disciplines and provides dedicated space for alternative, creative forms of movement.

Collectively, these actions transform the sports complex into a dynamic social infrastructure that contributes not only to physical health but also to emotional well-being and community identity.

By enabling access, encouraging learning, and fostering connections, the initiative lays the groundwork for long-term positive impact across demographic and cultural lines.
